What is Native Revegetation?

Native revegetation is the process of restoring and rebuilding natural landscapes by planting eco-sourced indigenous species in areas where native vegetation has been lost or degraded. This work is vital for supporting biodiversity, stabilising ecosystems, preventing erosion, and preserving the cultural and ecological heritage of Aotearoa. At Manawa Landcare, we see revegetation not just as planting, but as an act of restoration — of land, water, and wairua.

Types of Environments We Work In

Our team has extensive experience working across a range of landscapes, including:

Riparian zones: Replanting along rivers, streams, and waterways to prevent erosion, filter runoff, and support aquatic health.

Bush blocks: Restoring native forest cover on rural and lifestyle properties to support biodiversity and protect taonga species.

Wetlands: Reviving wetland ecosystems with water-tolerant native plants that help purify water and provide habitats for native wildlife.

Roadside and public reserves: Collaborating with councils and developers to reinstate native planting along road corridors and in public spaces.

No matter the setting, our planting plans are tailored to suit the soil, climate, and specific ecological conditions of each site.

Our Approach

At Manawa Landcare, our approach to native revegetation is guided by tikanga Māori, ecological integrity, and a deep respect for the whenua. We don't just plant trees — we restore life to the land in a way that honours both nature and culture.

Culturally Grounded

We uphold the principles of kaitiakitanga (guardianship) in every project. Our methods are shaped by mātauranga Māori (Māori knowledge) and support the aspirations of iwi, hapū, and local communities to reconnect with and restore their natural landscapes.

Eco-Sourced and Site Specific

We use eco-sourced native plants, grown from seeds collected in the same region as the planting site. This ensures genetic suitability, higher survival rates, and long-term ecological resilience. Every planting plan is tailored to suit the site's soil type, moisture levels, climate, and biodiversity goals.

End-to-End Solutions

From site preparation and species selection to planting, mulching, and maintenance, we deliver a full revegetation service. We also manage weed and pest control, erosion mitigation, and long-term monitoring to ensure planting success.

Community Focused

We value collaboration. Whether we’re working with councils, developers, marae, schools, or private landowners, our goal is to achieve outcomes that are environmentally sustainable, culturally respectful, and community-enhancing.
